Society

The East Grampian Coastline has a vibrant society with a high levels of quality of life due to strong economy and environment. It is however, facing major challenges. The population is biased towards working age people with less young (under 16) and older (over 65) than Scotland as a whole. This may be due to two major universities and high employment opportunites. It should be noted that over the last twenty years the number of older people has increased as a proportion.

Major inequalities do exist as highlighted as highlighted by the difference in healthy life expectancy. Whilst Aberdeen is around the Scottish average for this measure, Aberdeenshire has one of the highest health life expectancies. However the difference between wealthier and poorer areas can be over 20years.

The area has a strong connection to the coast through employment, but also via recreation with increased participation in water sports, walking and watching wildlife. The area also enjoys strong cultural links as highlighted by the Tall Ships race which will be returning to Aberdeen City in 2025.

The transition from Oil and Gas to renewable energy will make a major difference to the society in coming year and needs monitoring to ensure a just transition.
