Cathryn Lovie
Student Intern
Currently a University of St Andrews student, I am studying Environmental Science and Geography. As of September 2024, I will have started 3rd year, and by 2026 I will graduate with a BSc. Physical Geography has always been my favourite subject, and thus the rugged, geologically fascinating coastline of St Andrews seemed like the perfect place to further that passion.
I grew up in the leafy suburbs of Aberdeen, so have always been near both forests and coast. With the beautiful Cairngorms nearby, it would have been difficult not to develop a love for all things natural. I have spent time volunteering with the EGCP and the Aberdeen City Council Rangers, experiences that have solidified my pursuit of a career working with nature.
I worked with the EGCP last summer on the 2023 Beach Litter Survey and report, assessing the condition of East Grampian beaches. It was a very enjoyable and valuable experience of independent, practical research. As such, I am delighted to be back working with the organisation again!

Corinne Meinert
Project Intern
Corinne earned an MSc in Marine Biology with a specialisation in fisheries from Texas A&M University in 2018. Her career has involved a wide range of data-driven environmental projects, including wetland restoration and initiatives to reduce fisheries bycatch. After moving to Aberdeen in 2022, she has enjoyed exploring all that the Grampian region has to offer, from hiking to open water swimming. She looks forward to contributing her experience and enthusiasm for fisheries and the marine environment to EGCP.

Shaleen Sharma
Project Intern
Shaleen Sharma is a qualified lawyer with around five years of professional experience in legal and policy research, with a particular focus on energy, environmental, and sustainability issues. He recently completed a Master of Laws (LLM) in Energy Transition Law at the University of Aberdeen, where his studies explored how legal and policy frameworks can support a fair and effective transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
Shaleen has gained practical experience through policy-focused roles, including a summer internship with the University of Aberdeen, contributing to sustainability and climate adaptation initiatives in the North East of Scotland. He is currently supporting work on marine and coastal policy, with interests in marine spatial planning, environmental regulation, and the governance of coastal and marine resources.
He is passionate about using law and policy to protect coastal and environmental heritage, support community resilience, and help shape more sustainable and climate-friendly approaches to managing our natural environment.

Iona Macleod
Project Intern
I graduated from SRUC in 2024 with BSc (Hons) Wildlife and Conservation Management. During my studies I volunteered with Dr Sarah Marley carrying out shore-based bottlenose dolphin surveys at Aberdeen Harbour. I enjoyed this experience so much it led to studying the environmental and anthropogenic impacts of dolphin occurrence in the harbour for my honours project. Since graduating I completed a stint as a drone intern for Claire Stainfield, assisting with seal surveys at Newburgh beach for her PhD project. I also continued helping with dolphin surveys over summer, got the opportunity to work as a research assistant on a marine mammal acoustics project, and implemented my graphic design skills to create logos for 'Aberdeen Marine Mammal Project' and 'Seal Snap'.
These experiences deepened my appreciation for the importance of marine conservation and making research accessible. I am looking forward to bringing my combined passion for science and art to EGCP!

Charlotte Tomlinson
Project Intern
Charlotte Tomlinson is a 2024 graduate from SRUC with a BSc(Hons) degree in Wildlife and Conservation Management. She is a keen birder and bird ringer, particularly interested in seabird ecology. She aims to bring her passion for research and the coastal/marine environment to EGCP, highlighting the rich biodiversity that the East Coast supports.

Adam Barker
Student Intern
Originally from South Yorkshire, I grew up as an active individual thriving in the outdoors. At 18, I began working as an apprentice outdoor activity instructor in the heart of the Peak District National Park. This role led me to coach and instruct activities such as stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking, canoeing, and camping. My work took me across the globe to places like China and Hong Kong, where I engaged with diverse clientele from various cultures, faiths, and organizations. Through these activities, I developed a deep sense of environmental stewardship, particularly regarding the oceans. The COVID-19 pandemic brought my work in mainland China to a halt, necessitating my return to the UK. With no degree or higher education to rely on, I decided to take control of my career by becoming a freelance outdoor instructor. Simultaneously, I enrolled at the University of Aberdeen.
Ten years after starting as an apprentice, I now have a solid clientele of businesses seeking my instructor services and I am about to begin my fourth year of a BSc in Marine Biology. In 2023, I added a Divemaster internship to my repertoire of skills, further developing myself professionally. This, alongside my degree, has helped me better understand the dynamics of our natural environments and how humans interact with them. My aim is to leverage my past and present experiences and skills to highlight information regarding the coastal environment within the North East Scotland Marine Region. I plan to achieve this through surveying, data collection, and analysis, enabling policymakers and the general public to make informed decisions when visiting and developing the region.

George Trantham
Student Intern
I'm George, a fourth-year Ecology student at the University of Aberdeen, originally hailing from Southeast England. I made the decision to move to Aberdeen as a mature student, driven by my passion for understanding the intricate relationships between humans, animals, and their environments - especially within marine ecosystems.
