National Nature Reserves (NNR)
Key Findings
Described as an accolade, this designation is awarded to areas for the promotion of wildlife protection and public enjoyment of wildlife rich areas (Scotland’s National Nature Reserves, n.d.). While the primary goal of the designation is to protect precious pockets of wildlife, the areas should also be made accessible to the public in a way that is non-damaging to the habitat within (NatureScot, 2024).
43 NNRs are currently designated in Scotland (NatureScot, 2024), such as the St Cyrus NNR in the East Grampian area (NatureScot, 2020).
