Key Findings

- Since 1999 greenhouse gas emissions from Scotland have reduced by more than 50% (Fig. 1).
- 2021 figures indicate a sharp reduction in the emissions related to the electricity sector, showing a reduction in emissions of 89% since 2011. By contrast, the heat sector, industry, and transport have shown slight reductions of around 3%, 20% and 16% respectively (Scottish Renewables, n.d.).
- It should be noted that data for 2020 was impacted by restrictions due to COVID-19, which are likely to have increased domestic energy usage and reduced travel related usage.
