Offshore Wind Energy Production
Key Findings
- The East Grampian Coast is at the heart of the development of offshore wind technology. The current capacity is 173.2 megawatts but much larger windfarm arrays are planned.
- In 2017, the Hywind Scotland array was commissioned with a capacity of 30 megawatts. This was the World's first commercial floating windfarm.
- In 2018, the Aberdeen Offshore Windfarm, also known as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre was commissioned with the largest turbines in the world at the time. The operators, Vatternfall, are now in the process of develop the World’s first hydrogen-producing offshore wind turbine, with the electrolyser sited directly onto an existing operational turbine at the EOWDC. This project is in development and it is anticipated that production will begin in 2025.
- In 2021, the Kincardine Offshore Windfarm was commissioned with a capacity of 50 megawatts. This was the largest floating windfarm at the time of commissioning.
- North of the region, but with potential links to Fraserburgh, the Green Volt scheme aims to have a capacity of between 300 and 520 megawatts and to be operational by 2027. Fraserburgh also serves as the control centre for the Moray East Windfarm which has a capacity of 950megawatts
