Razorbill (Alca torda)

Key Findings

  • Razorbills (Alca torda) are a common breeding resident on the East Grampian Coast. They can be found on many of the area's seacliffs alongside the more numerous common guillemot.
  • Razorbills are Amber list species.
  • It is estimated that there are around 165,000 breeding pairs in the UK. The major breeding site on the East Grampian coast is at Fowleheugh with 11,750 breeding pairs or 7% of the UK population. Razorbills also breed outside of the reserve as well as on the rocky coast between Forvie NNR and Longhaven, although we do not have accurate numbers.
  • Numbers of breeding razorbills are counted semi-regularly by JNCC and RSPB. Numbers dipped between 1999 and 2006 but have recovered and far surpassed the 1999 total.
