Sandwich tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis)

Key Findings

  • Sandwich terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis) are a common summer visitor to the East Grampian Coast with large numbers breeding at the Forvie National Nature Reserve.
  • Sandwich terns are Amber list species.
  • It is estimated that there around 14,000 breeding pairs in the UK and around 2000 in Scotland meaning that the Forvie NNR contains around 8% of the UK population and 55% of the Scottish Population in 2022; however these figure will change year on year.
  • Numbers of breeding terns have been increasing at the Forvie NNR. However, the long term effects of bird flu cannot be assessed at this time. It should also be noted - due to a number of factors -  including predation the colony moved to another location in the mid 1990s with no breading at Forvie for two years.
