Pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus)

Key Findings

  • The Pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus) is a common winter visitor and passage migrant. Small numbers over-summer in the region.
  • Pink-footed geese are Amber list species.
  • It is estimated that there around 510,000 wintering in the UK. Estimation of number wintering in the East Grampian Region is complicated by the movement of geese throughout the area with birds tending to initially using the Loch of Strathbeg before moving on to other sites further south or locally at Meikle Loch or the Loch of Skene. There has been a general reduction in numbers using the Loch of Strathbeg from a peak around 2014. Numbers at the Loch of Skene and Meikle Loch have increased.
  • Pink-footed geese are still actively hunted in the area and have been affected by avian flu, although figures for this are not yet available.
