Surfers Against Sewage (marine conservation charity)

Key Findings

Role:

Surfers Against Sewage exists to inspire, unite and support people in protecting the ocean and the natural environments connected to it. Originally formed by surfers concerned about sewage pollution, the charity has grown into a nationwide movement that mobilises community action, public campaigns, education, and citizen science to drive environmental change. Their work helps individuals become “Ocean Activists”, empowering people to take action against pollution, influence better policy, and safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations.

Responsibilities:

Surfers Against Sewage’s core responsibilities include:

Campaigning and Advocacy: Leading nationwide campaigns to reduce sewage discharge, tackle plastic pollution, and influence environmental policy at local and national levels.

Community Mobilisation: Engaging volunteers, supporters and local groups in initiatives like beach cleans, awareness events and Plastic Free Communities programmes.

Public Education: Providing resources, education and outreach on ocean health, water quality, climate impacts, and sustainable behaviours.

Citizen Science & Data: Gathering and sharing data on water quality and pollution to inform campaigns and empower communities with evidence‑based insights.

Support Services: Offering tools such as the Safer Seas & Rivers Service app to check sewage pollution alerts and report issues.

These efforts help hold polluters and policymakers accountable while building a resilient movement for marine protection.
