Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)
Key Findings
Role:
The RNLI’s primary role is to provide lifesaving services and promote water safety. As a charitable organisation independent of government funding, it operates lifeboats and lifeguard units, engages in public education on water safety, and works to prevent drowning through awareness and training. RNLI crews, most of whom are volunteers, stand ready 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to emergencies at sea and along inland waterways. Alongside rescue operations, the charity shares safety advice with diverse communities, from schools to commercial water users, and collaborates internationally to share drowning‑prevention expertise
Responsibilities:
The RNLI’s key responsibilities include:
Search and Rescue Operations: Running a fleet of lifeboats and supporting crews that respond to calls for distress around the coasts of the UK, Ireland and nearby islands at all times.
Lifeguard Services: Providing trained beach lifeguards during the bathing season to help keep coastal visitors safe and to assist in emergencies.
Water Safety Education: Offering advice, resources and training to help people understand how to be safer in and around water, aiming to reduce accidents and prevent drowning.
Volunteer Support and Training: Recruiting, training and supporting thousands of volunteers who crew lifeboats, serve as lifeguards or help with fundraising and community engagement.
International Drowning Prevention: Sharing expertise with communities most at risk from drowning and supporting lifesaving work beyond the UK and Ireland.
