Communities Inshore Fisheries Alliance (CIFA)
Key Findings
Role:
The Communities Inshore Fisheries Alliance (CIFA) is a fishing-focused and community-based organisation established in 2017 to provide a collective voice for Scotland’s inshore fishing sector and the coastal communities that depend on it. It was formed from grassroots inshore fishing associations and represents a wide range of members, including fishers, fishing businesses, coastal communities, processors, and related industry partners, with the aim of championing the economic, social and cultural importance of sustainable inshore fisheries across Scotland.
Responsibilities:
CIFA’s core responsibilities include advocating for sustainable and fair fisheries management policies, supporting the development and resilience of inshore fishing communities, and providing a platform for member engagement in policy discussions. The alliance promotes collaboration across different sectors and gear types, works to influence regional and national fisheries governance, and seeks to ensure that the voices of smaller boats and local fishing businesses are heard in regulatory and planning processes. CIFA also fosters dialogue between fishers, community groups, scientists, and government bodies to help shape inclusive management approaches that balance environmental stewardship with economic viability.
