British Divers Marine Life Rescue (Marine Mammal Medics – BDMLR)
Key Findings
Role:
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) is the UK’s specialist charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation of marine mammals. Within BDMLR, the Marine Mammal Medics are trained volunteer responders who provide frontline assistance to seals, dolphins, porpoises, whales, and other marine mammals in distress around the UK coastline. Their role spans emergency response, community education, and partnership with statutory agencies.
Responsibilities:
BDMLR and its network of Marine Mammal Medics are responsible for responding to reports of stranded, injured, or entangled marine mammals. This includes providing first-response assessment, applying specialist rescue and disentanglement techniques where appropriate, and coordinating with partners such as the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme and local authorities. The charity also delivers training programmes for volunteers, promotes best practice in marine wildlife handling, and engages the public in reporting and understanding marine mammal welfare issues.
