Aberdeen City Council Ranger Service & Aberdeenshire Council Ranger Service
Key Findings
Role:
The Aberdeen City Council Ranger Service provides dedicated countryside and coastal access support within the Aberdeen City area. Rangers act as ambassadors for the outdoors, helping residents and visitors enjoy natural spaces safely and sustainably. They support environmental learning and connect people, especially young people and community groups, with nature.
In common with other Ranger Services in Scotland, there are 3 main aims that include:
1. providing a warm welcome and provide support to help people enjoy the outdoors
2. increasing awareness, understanding, care and responsible use of the natural and cultural heritage
3. supporting the sustainable management and use of the outdoors to meet a range of objectives
Responsibilities:
Rangers deliver a range of outdoor programmes, including guided walks, wildlife-focused events, and activities that promote responsible access in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. They also assist with habitat management, community engagement, educational outreach, and liaising between the council and voluntary conservation groups. Rangers contribute to maintaining information about local natural assets and ensuring that public spaces are welcoming and safe for all.
