Waterloo Foundation - Environment Programme
Key Findings
Total Value of Fund
The Waterloo Foundation’s Environment Fund does not list a single published total fund value, but the programme operates two main strands, Marine and Tropical Rainforests.
Amount that can be applied for
The majority of Environment programme grants are for a total of £100,000 – £150,000, spread over one or more years (often for up to five years).
Percentage that can be applied for
The Foundation does not specify a fixed percentage of project costs that must be covered by the grant. Instead, requests are considered against project budget needs and priorities. Match funding, or co-funding, is favourably regarded where already in place.
Who can apply
Organisations with a recognisable charitable purpose can apply, including:
• Registered charities (including with OSCR for Scotland)
• Charitable incorporated organisations
• Community interest companies
• Social enterprises and NGOs with public benefit aims
• Academic institutions and research bodies (subject to programme priorities)
• Individuals are generally unlikely to be funded directly
Aims of the fund
The Environment Programme’s goals are to support projects that:
• Mitigate damage to the environment caused by human activity.
• Halt and restore declining fish stocks through sustainable fishing and fisheries management (Marine strand).
• Protect tropical rainforests, mainly via avoided deforestation and supporting intact forest ecosystems (Tropical Rainforests strand).
• Deliver environmental benefits for people, climate and biodiversity, including community partners and disadvantaged groups where relevant.
Timing
The Environment Fund runs on an annual cycle with two deadlines per programme each year:
Marine programme: 1 March and 1 September.
Tropical Rainforests programme: 1 June and 1 November.
After each deadline, applications are reviewed, and decisions typically take several months (often up to about six months) from submission to final grant award.
Examples of successful projects
The Waterloo Foundation’s Environment programme supports both local and strategic initiatives. Typical funded work includes:
• Marine- sustainable fisheries: Initiatives addressing declining fish stocks and illegal fishing, including small-scale fishery support and policy influence.
• Tropical Rainforests- avoided deforestation: Projects focused on protecting large rainforest areas, supporting community forest management and forest peoples’ rights.
Note: Specific project names tied to Scotland-linked groups are not centrally listed online; applicants can contact the Foundation for examples of recent recipients relevant to environment themes.)
