Large Habour Overview: Peterhead Harbour
Key Findings
Peterhead Harbour is a Trust Port, operated by Peterhead Port Authority, that acts as a major centre for the deep sea fishing sector and as a major supply hub for the offshore energy sector. The harbour has been in existence for over 400 years, but the main harbour walls were completed in 1956.
Peterhead Harbour is home to a wide range of uses. As well as the fishing, cargo and oil and gas the harbours also includes a marina, a sailing club, and a seaside award beach (with Excellent water quality).
The turnover of the port has shown steady growth since 2006, with a turnover of over £14 million in 2023 (Fig. 1).
Fish throughput by value has increased for all groups of fish (i.e. white, pelagic, and shellfish) between 2009 and 2023. Pelagic species have seen the biggest overall increase to 2023, however it should be noted that all fish throughput groups show strong annual variability.
Cargo imports and exports showed increases between 2007 and 2014, before reducing to slightly below 2007 levels by 2023.
A full range of information, historical context and management information can be found on the Peterhead Port Authority website.
