Scottish Renewable Electricity Production
Key Findings

- Since 2009 the amount of energy in Scotland generated from renewable sources has increased from c.9058 GWh to c.30,034 GWh (Fig. 1). This has been the result of a major increase in wind power generation combined with increases in all other production methods.
- In terms of Scotland, between 2010-22 the amount of renewable electricity production compared to electricity usage/consumption increased from 24% to 97% (Fig. 3). This compares to 46% for the UK and 22% for the USA, and would put Scotland as the 3rd highest proportion in Europe.
- Whilst other sectors have reduced their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the increase in renewable electricity generation has had a major impact on reducing GHG emissions from the energy supply sector between 1999 and 2020 (Fig. 4).
